The Great Brexit Betrayal continues apace as Parliament voted to back a government motion calling for the extension of Article 50.
Earlier, there was a chink of light for Theresa May as an amendment tabled by Hillary Benn MP which would have seen her lose effective control of the Parliamentary timetable was defeated by just 2 votes.
A amendment calling specifically for the extension of Article 50 in preparation for a second referendum was heavily defeated, gaining only 85 votes.
As Mrs May said following the loss of yet another ‘Meaningful Vote’, seeking an extension of Article 50 and therefore a delay of Brexit will now become government policy and all eyes will now turn to the European Union and whether they will in-fact grant this. It mandates a short ‘technical’ extension until June 30th IF her Withdrawal Agreement passes.
It will embolden Mrs May who will now seek to put her deal back before Parliament next week with the next ‘Meaningful Vote’ penciled in for Tuesday as she can now hang the threat of a long delay to Brexit over the ERG and DUP. She won the vote by 412 to 202.
