Brexit Party candidates have been standing in local elections for some time now and indeed have a small cadre of elected Councillors who have defected from other Parties as diverse as Labour and UKIP.
In Hartlepool, Nigel Farage’s Party is now in control of the Borough Council alongside the Conservative Party.
Nine, formally Independent Councillors, who joined the Party following a meeting with Chairman Richard Tice, announced the decision yesterday evening.
Tice said that the decision was a further blow to Labour in the area, which heavily backed Brexit, following its increasingly hardline backing for Remaining in the EU:
“Regardless of the shenanigans in Westminster, Brexiteers in the North East are pushing to take back control so they can respect the Brexit vote.”
Labour has now lost control of all five Tees Valley Councils. It looks promising for Mr. Farage’s Party when it comes to winning the support of former Labour patriotic working-class voters that backed Brexit.
