Fiona Onasanya, Peterborough’s disgraced local MP, literally has lost all her allies. All the opposition parties want her gone, Peterborough residents are fuming and even the national Labour Party’ immediately distanced itself from her and now even the local Labour Party has turned on her.
The Peterborough Labour Party met yesterday in emergency session. National Labour Party Chair, Ian Lavery told local activists Ms Onasanya had been instantly expelled from Labour upon her conviction for perverting the course of justice.
Cllr Shaz Nawaz, leader of the local Labour Group on Peterborough City Council, told the local paper, the Peterborough Telegraph, that Labour activists want Onasanya to do the “only honorable thing left” and to resign. Question is, of course, will she, the date for her sentencing has yet to be decided. If she is sentenced to 12 months or more imprisonment (even if the sentence is suspended) then she automatically loses her seat, a custodial sentence of less than 12 months triggers the recall mechanism which will almost certainly achieve the 10% of constituents support it will need with backing from all the major political parties.
Peterborough voted heavily to leave the EU (60.9%) so this could be a vital by-election for Brexiteers whenever it occurs.
