THERESA May rejected a free trade deal that President Donald Trump offered four months ago, it has been claimed.
When Mr Trump visited Britain four months ago, he offered Britain a free trade deal, but the Prime Minister turned him down, a former minister said.
Owen Paterson revealed Mr Trump’s aides told him that the President had offered a free trade deal “on a plate” when he met with Mrs May at Chequers in July but was told the UK “wasn’t ready” reported the Telegraph.
The revelation came as Mr Trump slammed Mrs May’s sellout Brexit deal and said it could threaten a US/UK trade deal, saying the withdrawal plan “sounds like a great deal for the EU”.
Speaking to reporters in Washington earlier this week he said that the deal as “good for the EU” and that it may damage the trading relationship between the US and the UK, echoing the criticism made by leading Brexiteers that it makes an independent trading policy next to impossible.
He said: “It sounds like a great deal for the EU and I think we have to take a look at seriously whether the UK is allowed to trade because right now, if you look at the deal, they may not be able to trade with us and that wouldn’t be a good thing.
“I don’t think they meant that, I don’t that the Prime Minister meant that and hopefully she’ll be able to do something about that.
“Right now as the deal stands they may not be able to trade with the us and I don’t think they want that at all, that would be a very big negative for them.” added Trump.
