Perhaps as a foreshadowing of what is to come in 7 days time when the House Of Commons vote on Treason May’s Withdrawal Agreement, the government was humiliated today in the Commons and has been forced ro back down.
MP’s voted by 311 to 293 to find Ministers in contempt of Parliament for refusing to publish the full legal advice provided by Attorney General Geoffrey Cox on the legalities of the Withdrawal Agreement. It had previously tried to have the matter reffeded to a committee but that proposal was defeated by 4 votes.
Andrea Leadsom, the Leader Of The House, announced that the full advice will now be published. Sounding somewhat bitter, Leadsom said that she still intended to raise the matter with the Privileges Committee but the “final and full” advice to the Cabinet would be published immediately. Significantly, the Democratic Unionist Party sided with Labour as all opposition parties banded together to inflict the defeat.
UPDATE: The Government has also lost an amendment moved by Arch-Remoaner Dominic Grieve to give Parliament greater control over Brexit, should the Withdrawal Agreement fall, by 321 to 299 votes.
