THERESA May’s personal humiliation has become Britain’s national humiliation as Michael Barnier, the EUs Chief Negotiator, savaged the Chequers Agreement.
Barnier stated plainly:
“I am not negotiating, of course, on the basis of the white paper.”
He raised concerns about practical, legal and budgetary issues. The unity of the single market would be maintained Mr Barnier insisted.
Meanwhile, the bickering within the government has continued. For the Remoaners, Anna Soubry has accused Theresa May of “capitulation” to Jacob Rees Moggs European Reform Group which she branded the “forces of darkness”.
Rees Mogg in turn has indicated that he would back Boris Johnson as a potential Prime Minister:
I backed Boris Johnson in the leadership contest two years ago because I thought he would be a good PM. He is absolutely terrific.
Mrs May’s problems are only going to multiply as the EU pushes home the advantage given to them by her weak domestic position and turns the screw on Britain further.
