BLACK, BOLD & BEAUTIFUL: Five Black Celebs you DIDN’T know were LGBT

ONE problem that has been getting more and more attention lately is the visibility and representation of black LGBT people in media and entertainment.

The more black LGBT people are shown in media, the more likely audiences willaccept and understand them, and the more likely negative stereotypes and prejudices will be dismantled.

Things are definitely changing, with so many black LGBT celebrities now making an impact on their audiences through their brilliant work. One major work of popular culture have shown black LGBT people in a good light. In “Pose,” for example.

Black transwomen and queer people of color are the centers of attraction, and their stories are represented sympathetically and accurately. The show has received high scores for its accurate depiction of black LGBT people and the way it explores the history of the ballroom scene in the ’80s and ’90s.

The favorable effects on mental health and well-being observed when black LGBT people are portrayed and visible in popular culture are not to be underestimated. Feelings of alienation and the need to connect with others can be ameliorated when people encounter positive portrayals of people who share their circumstances. This has the potential to improve individuals’ sense of agency and well-being, as well as their self-esteem and mental health.

For members of the LGBT community, or members of any minority group, dating can present unique difficulties. Many causes can contribute to such difficulties, including discrimination, marginalization, and social stigma. For instance, many people who identify as LGBT endure discrimination and harassment, which can make it hard for them to feel comfortable and secure when dating.

One of the biggest dating challenges for LGBT people is finding a partner after they come out and accept their sexuality. Thankfully,  diverse gay dating sites and apps are now available to make that search easier than ever. Racism, ableism, and classism are only a few examples of discrimination other marginalized groups may experience. But being on a dating site where everyone is looking for a gay partner can make it all work seamlessly and quite effectively.

Although there are many notable mentions, here is a bit more about some of the most popular black LGBT celebrities.

Frank Ocean

Musician and songwriter Frank Ocean is well-known for his original sound, style, and blunt attitude toward his sexuality. In 2012, he gained widespread attention after he wrote a letter on Tumblr detailing his first love affair at the age of 19. As one of the few out gay males in the hip-hop and R&B music scenes, this was a big deal for Ocean.

Willow Smith

Willow Smith’s many skills include singing, acting, and dancing. Moreover, she has been open about her LGBT identity, as seen in an episode of her mother’s Facebook show, “Red Table Talk,” from this year. During the presentation, she admitted feeling attracted to men and women equally, characterizing herself as someone who is “open” to new things. Overall, Willow Smith is a role model for young people in the LGBTQ+ community because she promotes acceptance of one’s own unique identity while celebrating the identities of others.

Laverne Cox

In addition to being a successful actress, Laverne Cox is also a pioneer in the fight for transgender rights. She portrayed Sophia Burset in “Orange is the New Black, ” which won her a nomination in Emmy Awards. Cox is also a strong supporter of trans rights, frequently speaking out on transgender matters. GLAAD and the National LGBTQ Task Force have honored her with awards for her advocacy.

Lil Nas X

Grammy-winning rapper and singer Lil Nas X created waves in the business with his unique sound and style, as well as his willingness to be honest about his sexual orientation. His song “Old Town Road” became a worldwide phenomenon and stayed at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 for a then-record 19 consecutive weeks. Nas X has been open about being homosexual, utilizing his music and social media to bring attention to the LGBT community and encourage the acceptance of its members.

Tessa Thompson

Tessa Thompson became popular by delivering performances in TV shows and movies, such as “Westworld,” “Creed,” and “Thor: Ragnarok.” But, she is a vocal supporter of the LGBT community and has spoken frankly about her own bisexuality. She has always stressed the need to include LGBT characters in media by noting, “visibility is vital.” She has spoken out about the importance of gay people of color being represented and included in the entertainment industry.
