I am sure everyone reading this will have heard of the Secret Millionaire well Labour in Croydon have introduced the secret pay hike.
Council leader Tony Newman plans to increase Councillors allowances at a meeting of the full council tomorrow but Inside Croydon reports that by 10am Friday, the deadline for items to be discussed to be made public, no information had been forthcoming:
Under The Local Authorities (Executive Arrangements) (Meetings and Access to Information) (England) Regulations 2012, councils must make available for public inspection all reports that go with already published agenda items five clear days ahead of a council meeting.
Unsurprisingly, Labour’s local election manifesto in Croydon also neglected to mention the rise. It appears that the main beneficiaries of the rise will be Newman and his Cabinet colleagues who currently receive £43,339 a year. Backbench councillors’ pay is £11,239 a year.
The largesse doesn’t stop there, oh no. Somewhat inexplicably, Croydon Councillors managed to spend £15,000 on flights between 2015-2018. However, the same culture of secrecy prevented full disclosure. John O’Connell, Chief Executive of the TaxPayers’ Alliance, said:
“Unfortunately, Croydon didn’t fully respond to our request to information, so I sincerely hope that they haven’t spent hard-working families’ council tax jetting around the world.
“Where possible, councils should avoid flying except for statutory requirements, such as fulfilling child protection duties.”
Council Tax in Croydon rose by 5.01% proving that it is ultimately working class families that pay the price of Labour largesse.
