Despite last nights Parliamentary defeat and an expected series of defeats tonight in the Commons, Boris Johnson will be “ok” President Trump said today.
During a briefing on the situation following Hurricane Dorian, Trump said that Boris is a friend of his but not to worry about him as he “knows how to win”.
Johnson suffered several setbacks in the Commons today. The Letwin/Benn Bill was passed through the Commons with relative ease. The majority for the so-called ‘Rebel Alliance’ increased from 27 last night to 29 in the vote on the second reading and it passed its third reading to move to the Lords by 327 votes to 299, a ‘Rebel’ majority of 28.
Labour’s opposition to a General Election hardened with the Party saying that it may not even back a poll until Johnson has formally requested and accepted an extension to Article 50. Although Johnson has tabled a motion calling for a General Election it was expected to not secure the 2/3s majority required by the Fixed Term Parliaments Act.
