Kevin McKeon, a Labour Councillor in Bolton, landed himself in hot-water after he described Britain as a “junior partner” to America and Russia during World War II while taking part in a debate on Brexit. McKeon is Labour’s Chief Whip on the Council.
He said Britain won the war because it was helped by both America and Russia and that Brexiteers needed to “accept the realities of history” and that Britain standing alone was a “foundational myth” of the Leave campaign.
Bolton West MP, Conservative Chris Green said he was “shocked” by the “dismissive” comments. Bolton voted to back Brexit by 58.1%.
McKeon was however unrepentant. He told the Local Democracy Reporting Service that he did not regret making the comments and that he was trying to put the Brexit debate into historical “context.”
Time and time Labour demonstrates in words and deeds for patriotic working class voters and Britain as a country.
