Yaqub Ahmed was being taken from London Heathrow to Turkey. He had previously been convicted for his part in the gang rape of a teenage girl. Along with his gang, Ahmed lured a 16-year-old girl into a flat in Crouch End and raped her. Yaqub Ahmed was sentenced to 8 years in prison for conspiracy to rape.
Other members of the gang ended up absconding and fighting for ISIS such as Ondogo Ahmed ended up fighting for ISIS after absconding while out on licence. Ondogo Ahmed crossed into Syria via Turkey on 2 August 2013 and took the nom-de-guerre Abu Yusuf al-Britani. He died fighting for ISIS in Syria.
Yaqub Ahmed served less than half his sentence and lived in a half-way house until, due to the seriousness of his offence, the Home Office ordered his deportation. Passengers on the flight, however, had other ideas and a dozen holidaymakers intervened to stop his deportation and have now opened the door to Ahmed lodging a possible appeal.
