BACK FROM THE DEPP: Johnny Depp WINS $50m in Defamation Case against Amber Heard

JOHNNY Depp has won the jury verdict in his defamation case against his ex-wife Amber Heard for $50 million in Fairfax Country Virginia and he has already won back his public. Social media is overwhelmingly on his side. She had countersued him for $100 million.

The jury of seven awarded Johnny $10.35 million, including $10 million in compensatory damages and $350,000 in punitive damages, after deliberating for about 13 hours. The jury proved to be fair in that they awarded Amber $2 million for her second of three counts, that Johnny’s lawyer, Adam Waldman, defamed her with his statements to the Daily Mail in May 2016 claiming that Amber set Johnny up in a hoax when police came to their apartment.

Johnny was not in court but issued this statement, said: “The jury gave me my life back.”

“Six years ago, my life, the life of my children, the lives of those closest to me, and also, the lives of the people who for many, many years have supported and believed in me were forever changed,”

“False, very serious and criminal allegations were levied at me via the media, which triggered an endless barrage of hateful content, although no charges were ever brought against me,” he added.

“It had already traveled around the world twice within a nanosecond and it had a seismic impact on my life and my career.”

Amber issued this statement, “The disappointment I feel today is beyond words. I’m heartbroken that the mountain of evidence still was not enough to stand up to the disproportionate power, influence, and sway of my ex-husband. She also, stated, “It sets back the clock to a time when a woman who spoke up and spoke out could be publicly shamed and humiliated. It sets back the idea that violence against women is to be taken seriously.””

Amber may have won her court case in the UK in November 2020, where Johnny was unsuccessful in his defamation case there. The Sun characterized Johnny as a wife beater.  Amber convinced the judge she was a battered wife, but that judge ignored police testimony and many other witnesses. Johnny also lost the right to appeal.

At issue in the current Virginia court case is an op-ed in the Washington Post, written by ACLU lawyers and PR people with Amber Heard’s name on it. The op-ed appeared on December 18, 2018 with the title,  Opinion   Amber Heard: I spoke up against sexual violence — and faced our culture’s wrath. That has to change. In the piece Amber calls herself a “public figure representing domestic abuse.”

The op-ed doesn’t name Johnny but it can be implied that he’s the abuser. The op-ed was republished elsewhere attaching Johnny as the probable abuser, which was enough, according to the actor, for him to lose new movie contracts and other work. The opinion piece was timed for the release of Amber’s about to be released movie, Aquaman, and apparently the op-ed was designed as PR ahead of the movie premiere.

As the trial unfolded in VA this past month, Amber admitted to hitting Johnny in several audio excerpts played in court but there were no statements of Johnny saying he ever hit her.

Johnny took the stand again on Thursday May 26, 2022, and said of Amber’s statements . . . “it’s insane to hear heinous accusations of violence, sexual violence, that she’s attributed to me, that she’s accused me of,”

“I don’t think anyone enjoys having to split themselves open and tell the truth, but there are times when one just simply has to because it’s gotten out of control.”

“Horrible. Ridiculous. Humiliating. Ludicrous. Painful. Savage. Unimaginably brutal. Cruel. And all false.”

From closing arguments on Friday May 27, 2022 here are some of the main points –

There are no police reports of Amber authenticating her being injured.

When TMZ showed up at the LA court house for Amber’s temporary restraining order against Johnny (who was out of town) May 26, 2022, they were told which side of her face to photograph ahead of time. She went to the courthouse with no makeup covering the alleged “bruises” which she claimed was not usual.

Amber’s photos of arm and facial bruises cannot be authenticated and may have been altered according to expert testimony because she got rid of the phone they were taken.  There was no way to corroborate Amber’s injuries were real.

Amber’s version of an Orient Express honeymoon photo from 2015 is pale and doesn’t show Johnny with a black eye. She claimed she didn’t punch Johnny eye to produce a shiner. Johnny claimed she photoshopped it. His version of the photo is somewhat darker and he has a noticeable black eye.

Amber claims First Amendment of the US Constitution gives her the right to write any opinion that she feels is true about being abused. The problem is if she made up the charges of bruises and assaults, then the First Amendment no longer applies.
