JOE Lycett received an “exclusive statement” from David Beckham following his viral protest last month, and the brummie funny man broadcasted it on his ‘Got Your Back’ Channel 4 special last night.
The 34-year-old comedian went viral last month when he appeared to put £10,000 in a shredder in protest against the retired footballer’s £10 million World Cup deal with Qatar – where it is illegal to be gay – before revealing it was a trick and he actually donated the money.
The stunt was covered on Channel 4, and Joe revealed Beckham’s representatives got in touch.
He tweeted: “UPDATE: David Beckham’s team have issued my programme with an exclusive statement, which will be broadcast tonight as part of my Got Your Back special at 9pm on @channel4.
“As far as we are aware this is the only statement he or his team have given to any outlet regarding his involvement in Qatar.
“I have been advised that legally I cannot give my opinion on it, so you’ll have to make up your own minds.”
Elsewhere on ‘Joe Lycett vs David Beckham – A Got Your Back Special’, the comedian will feature some special guests, while he has praised the team behind the programme.
He continued: “We also speak to some LGBTQ+ football teams and Dr Nasser Mohamed, the first openly gay Qatari, who Beckham blocked on Instagram. We also reunite some of the cast of Footballers’ Wives lol.
“I’d like to thank the Got Your Back team and the team at Channel 4 for their extraordinary hard work on this project. (sic)”
As part of the protest, the ‘QI’ star – who donated the money to LGBTQ+ charities – later shredded an historic edition of the gay men’s magazine Attitude with David on the cover and lamented that the Premier League star was once a “great ally” for the community and he would “love to speak to him” about his actions.
Got Your Back is available to stream now on All4.
