HUGH Dennis thinks ‘Mock The Week’ could “out-survive” Liz Truss as Prime Minister.
The longrunning current affairs comedy panel show – which is hosted by Dara O Briain – is set to end on Friday night after 17 years, while Britain’s current PM is facing calls to step down.
Speaking to RadioTimes.com, Hugh said: “Somebody had said at the beginning of the series, you know, we knew ‘Mock The Week’ was being taken off air, but I don’t think we realised that we might out-survive the new prime minister.
“If she goes – wow! [Although] I don’t think we can claim any role in that.”
Last week, Chancellor of the Exchequer Kwasi Kwarteng left his position and was replaced by Jeremy Hunt.
Hugh – who has appeared on ‘Mock The Week’ since its launch – quipped: “Well again, you kind of think, wow.
“In the world of politics, you can be Chancellor for 38 days so lasting 17 years doing something is really remarkable.”
For the final episode, Hugh and Dara will be joined by Angela Barnes, Alasdair Beckett-King, Rhys James, Zoe Lyons and Ahir Shah.
And despite the way the political landscape has gone, the 60-year-old star insisted satire hasn’t become any harder over the past 17 years.
Hugh explained: “It’s kind of an interesting age where you seem to be able to say anything, you know, that sort of fake news-y stuff is kind of interesting.
“But I don’t think it’s more difficult to satirise at all. I think if you look back over the 17 years, it’s all been pretty silly.”
In August the BBC said while it was “proud” of the panel show, the decision to end it after 21 series was made in order to make room for new shows.
In a statement, the the Beeb commented: “We are really proud of the show but after 21 series we have taken the difficult decision in order to create room for new shows.”
