In a truly ominous sign of things potentially to come in terms of a hard-line crackdown on free speech, French President Emmanuel Macron has said anyone who is convicted of ’hate speech’ should be banned from social media for life.
Speaking at the Representative Council of Jewish Organisations in France, Macron complained the clampdown on free speech is going too ”slowly” in Europe.
He compared those convicted of these crimes to football hooligans who are routinely banned from games if they are convicted of a relevant offence.
His comments come as his government has announced it will ”embed” government regulators in Facebook to scrutinise how it regulates hate speech.
Critics of Macrons actions have branded his measures ”repressive”. French journalist Gabriel Robin said:
”Never, I repeat, ever has a liberal government taken so many repressive measures.”
It is of course no coincidence that Macrons government has been rocked by the Yellow Vest protests and his main rival is the National Rally and Marine Le Pen….
