ANGELA Merkel has FIRED an Intelligence Chief who defended the Chemnitz protesters according to reports.
Georg Maaßen was dismissed from his position as head of the domestic intelligence agency by Merkel — but in a compromise to avert a serious rift in her fragile coalition he will keep his post at the Interior Ministry.
Maaßen questioned the authenticity of videos which apparently showed the Chemnitz protestors targeting immigrants, he said there was no evidence of a “manhunt” against foreigners.
His comments directly clashed with and undermined Angela Merkel’s cack-handed attempts to smear the protestors. She claimed that they represented “hate on the streets”. Maaßen has also been accused of sharing confidential information with the AfD.
Merkel’s Social Democratic Coalition partners have been at loggerheads with the Christian Social Union who are also part of the governing Coalition. CSU leader and Interior Minister Horst Seehofer backed Maaßen to stay in his job. However, this was nowhere enough to save him from being punished for speaking out against the German establishment.
