MEPs have returned from their long summer break to what for them is a doubtlessly a welcome surprise. Of course, it is a less than welcome slap in the face for the hard-pressed hard-working taxpayer across the continent who have just forked out north of £800,000 for these baubles. The 43 in TVs retail at around £530 per pop.
It is thought that MEPs were informed of their new arrivals prior to the summer recess via email however it follows news earlier on in the year where they have courted controversy, voting down measures which would have meant increased scrutiny of how they spend their expenses. Greater oversight of how they spend their €4,416 monthly allowance was rejected in March.
James Carver MEP indicated that MEPs were NOT consulted, saying: “We weren’t consulted about this expenditure and have been given no rationale why it has been determined MEPs need to watch TV during the day.”
British MEPs were included in the gift-giving despite them being slated to leave the European Parliament next year when the Article 50 process completes. Quite what will become of their new additions no-one knows, maybe the other MEPs are already drawing lots for a second TV to adorn their office.
