SANTIAGO Abascal, the leader of VOX – a Spanish populist Party has told the conservative Fratelli d’Italia (Brothers of Italy) at a meeting in Rome that he believes Matteo Salvini was ousted from the government of Italy due to pressure from the EU.
Abascal said: It is clear that Minister Salvini was the victim of what he had denounced for 18 months, that Italians are less and less masters of their destiny, which once again was decided between Brussels and Strasbourg On this I think I see pressure from Brussels to push Salvini away from the government, again damaging the sovereignty of a member state of the European Union.”
Salvini was pushed out of government when the former coalition partners of his League Party, the 5* Movement, formed a new government with the centre-left Democratic Party. Despite this, both Salvini and the League continue to command mass support from Italians.
Regarding Brexit, Abascal accused the EU of “blackmailing” Britain and sanctioning countries such as Poland and Hungry who wish to adopt stricter immigration policies.
