It seems that the left-wing usurpation of power in Italy has spectacularly backfired. Matteo Salvini, despite his exclusion from power, continues to command widespread respect and support.

Salvini’s Party, the League, is in a commanding lead in the polls. If there was a General Election tomorrow it would take 33% of the vote. The Democrat Party, the new leftist partners of Luigi Di Maio’s 5* Movement in government, is in a distant second place with 20%. Only 29% of respondents trusted the new government while a whopping 48% distrusted it, hardly surprising given that the government was formed with no involvement from the Italian people.
The new government has reversed Salvini’s tougher line on immigration, pledging instead to throw open the borders. However, most Italians (54%) think that this policy will be a failure and at this moment, Salvini is looking increasingly like a Prime Minister in waiting……
