Matteo Salvini’s border control policy has been an unqualified success. Last year, with the Democratic Party in charge, 3,176 illegal immigrants arrived in Italy in January alone – however, that number has been reduced by roughly 95% due to the tight controls brought in by Salvini.
Migrant transport ships have been told they are not welcome in Italian ports. In addition, after closing the ports, Salvini and the Italian government have focused on increasing deportations and, Italy now deports more radical Islamists than any other European country last year.
However, he shows no signs of resting on his laurels. The migrant transport NGO Sea Watch persists in attempting to land in Italy. Sea Watch-3, one of their ships, is currently off the coast of Syracuse with 47 migrants on board.
Last week, Salvini ordered Italian authorities to investigate the vessel and the NGO and demanded that the Dutch government take in the migrants due to the fact the ship had been flying under the flag of the Netherlands.
No wonder the Italian Deputy Prime Minister is so popular with the Italian people……
