TWITTER was embroiled in a fresh political free-speech row last night after removing verification from the British political party UKIP, Politicalite can reveal.
Last week, in footage leaked by Project Veritas, Twitter boss Jack Dorsey appeared to threaten the censorship of even more conservatives as part of a ‘much broader approach’ following the permanent suspension of US President Donald Trump.
That threat now appears to have become a reality after UKIP’s blue tick was removed without warning last night, with no reason given to party bosses.
“Twitter have for some reason unverified us just now, we are trying to get to the bottom of it.” a UKIP source told Politicalite last night.
The move follows the controversial commentator Katie Hopkins joining the party last week, the crackdown of right-wing accounts on the social media website and the permanent suspension of former US President Donald J. Trump following the Capitol riot that has seen Trump become the first US leader to be impeached twice.
After the Trump ban, thousands of patriots and pro-Trump supporters also had their accounts suspended, and other accounts lost thousands of Twitter followers overnight, including Politicalite.
Twitter still gives a blue verified badge to Hassan Rouhani, the authoritarian leader of Iran that kills gay people and has a horrific human rights record.
UKIP was founded in 1993, and has campaigned to take Britain out of the European Union.
It was the efforts of UKIP that forced former British Prime Minister David Cameron’s hand into holding an In/Out Referendum on EU membership, and the party was also instrumental in bringing about the largest democratic vote in British history.
NO MORE FREE TWEEETING
Twitter founder Jack Dorsey once claimed that his platform “stood for freedom of expression’.
In 2015, the once free-speech promoting CEO tweeted that Twitter “stood for freedom of expression.
Dorsey tweeted: “Twitter stands for freedom of expression, We stand for speaking truth to power, and we stand for empowering dialogue.”
It did, until it started banning people and presidents for ‘wrong-think.’
Politicalite has approached Twitter for comment.
