AUGUST is traditionally known as the silly season for politics. The winner of the silliest of this season award unquestionably goes to the Daily Mail.
It fell hook, line and sinker for a spoof story on the Archbishop Cramner blog which said that Ely Cathedral had agreed to fly the UKIP flag. Cramners blog is a favourite amoung orthodox Anglicans especially and it was actually lampooning the decision to fly the Pride flag.
However, the subtleties of the situation of the situation were seemingly lost on the Mail and its columnist Andrew Price who attacked the Cathedral for supporting UKIP. Price said: “I thought it was too good to be true and now am on bended knees begging for forgiveness.”
His act of contrition however has not been enough to spare the Mail having to face a formal complaint. Ely Cathedral confirmed that they have contacted press regulator IPSO.
