In response to a complaint to state election regulators in Washington D.C, a top Facebook lawyer has claimed that the tech giant enjoys “broad immuity” from state laws.
The complaint was filed by Eli Sanders, a journalist who requested local political ad data. Facebook refused the request and the lawyer acting on their behalf, Ben Stafford, argued to state regulators that Facebook in fact enjoys the immunity.
Currently the social media platform is engaged in a flurry of activity on both sides of the Atlantic in the run-up to the US Midterms next month. It announced its own plan to publish who is paying for political adverts. However, on the seedier and more repressive side, it purged 800 accounts for alleged ‘disinformation’. Quite how that will sit with the allegedly ‘liberal’ principals its newest employee, Nick Clegg is anyones guess but then again he is somewhat used to claiming to stand for one thing and being the frontman for something entirely different….
