FREE NAVALNY, SAY PROTESTERS: Anti-Russia Protests Hit Russian Embassy in Germany

DEMONSTRATORS gathered in Berlin on Saturday to show solidarity with Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny, urging his release from prison after he was jailed for three years.

Protesters gathered in front of the German chancellery and marched to the Russian embassy building, repeating the same route as the rally from January 31, carrying signs and banners demanding the release of political prisoners and calling for Russian president Vladimir Putin to step down.

The protest ended peacefully shortly after the group arrived at the embassy in the city centre. The Kremlin critic was taken into custody on January 17 upon his return to Russia from Germany, where he spent nearly five months recovering from an alleged Novichok nerve agent attack.

On January 18, Navalny was sentenced to 30 days in jail for breaching parole conditions of a suspended sentence from a 2014 embezzlement conviction.

Navalny was jailed for three years Tuesday as Police arrested his supporters outside court.

He arrived for his parole review hearing at Moscow City Court on Tuesday in handcuffs surrounded by Putin’s Police.

The activist was accused of breaching parole conditions of a suspended sentence from a 2014 embezzlement conviction.

The Federal Penal Correction Service (FSIN) is asking for three-and-a-half-year imprisonment for Navalny.

Police detained several supporters of the opposition leader outside the court.
