GLADIATORS is set to return on BBC1 decades after it launched in the early nineties.
TV industry magazine Broadcast reports that the Beeb is lining up the reboot with filming planned for Sheffield Arena next year.
The project has been in development for some time and the production team has already selected athletes that will star as Gladiators.
The original series ran on ITV from Birmingham’s National Indoor Arena fronted by Ulrika Jonsson from 1992 to 2000.
Iconic events such as Hang Tough, Duel, The Wall and The Eliminator saw contestants battle it out with the likes of Wolf, Jet and Hunter to become series champion.
It was commissioned by Nigel Lythgoe who produced Pop Idol and American Idol. The show made a brief comeback on Sky1 in 2008.
“It’s exactly the kind of Saturday night family entertainment show that BBC1 needs,” a source familiar with the project told Broadcast.
The BBC declined to comment when approached by Politicalite.
