LABOUR has suspended a black equality campaigner over alleged Islamophobia in another blow to Free Speech in Britain.
Trevor Phillips, 66 who has made programmes for Channel 4 has previously stated that Britain risks “flames” of racial and religious conflict because of a “liberal self-delusion” over the impact of mass immigration.
He also said the arrival of some Muslim groups in particular who are actively “resistant to the traditional process of integration” threatens to shake the foundations of “liberal democracy” itself.
Phillips, the former head of the equality watchdog said that decades of multiculturalism and diversity policy the UK is being allowed to “sleepwalk to catastrophe” by leaders too “touchy”, “smug”, “complacent” and “squeamish” to talk about race.
Echoing Enoch Powell’s “rivers of blood” speech, he said British politicians, media and educated elite in general to the Emperor Nero fiddling while Rome burned, unable even to recognise the “dark side of the diverse society”.
Ominous “muttering in the pub or grumbling at the school gate” about foreigners could, he insists, be the first signs of a backlash many thought could not happen in Britain because of a history of relative success in integrating new arrivals.
The 66-year-old anti-racism campaigner now faces an investigation and could be booted out of the party.
He said: “I’m kind of surprised that what is and always has been an open and democratic party decides that its members cannot have a healthy debate about how we address differences of values and outlook.
“They say I am accusing Muslims of being different. Well actually, that’s true. The point is Muslims are different. And in many ways I think that’s admirable.”
He was backed by Tory MP Ben Bradshaw who also took a free speech attack when he was banned from asking a question about poor White lads in the House of Commons last week.
The Mansfield MP said: “This swift action against Trevor Phillips is in stark contrast to the complete lack of action against anti-semites I & many other Labour MPs have reported repeatedly to @JennieGenSec & who remain Labour members.”
