POLITICALITE is LIVE at the second impeachment trial of former US President Donald Trump as it begins on Tuesday February 9, on the Senate Floor in Washington DC.
On the first day of the trial, eight Democratic House impeachment managers are expected to start presenting their case with oral arguments, followed by Trump’s lawyers, which will also be requested to outline the former president’s defence. It is uncertain how long this first part of the trial will last, but it is expected to conclude by February 11.
On January 26, the House Democratic impeachment managers formally delivered to the Senate the single article of impeachment with charges on “incitement of insurrection.” Traditionally, the trial would commence on the following day, but Senate leaders agreed on postponing the date to give Trump’s legal team more time to prepare and Senate Democrats a chance to confirm President Joe Biden’s Cabinet nominations.
Trump was impeached by the House of Representatives on January 13, accused of attempting to overturn the 2020 presidential election and was further accused of inciting the storming of the Capitol building in Washington DC on January 6.
He is the only President in US history to be impeached twice.
