NON-NEGOTIABLE: Ireland SLAPS DOWN May’s Proposed Brexit Next Steps

Theresa May is set to unveil her Brexit ‘Plan B’ today as speculation swirls about how she plans to reverse the crushing Parliamentary defeat of her Withdrawal Agreement.

Characteristic of the uncertainty that the failure of her plan has caused is the totally contradictory reports emerging around the key question of the Irish backstop.

Some reports are suggesting that a conference call with the Cabinet yielded “no actual solutions” while others say that Mrs May is, in fact, preparing to ditch the backstop entirely.

However, even if she wanted to ditch the backstop it is highly unlikely the Irish Government will allow this to happen. A bilateral treaty in place of the backstop is a “non-runner”. Ireland’s Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar described the backstop as “non-negotiable.”

The EU has similarly insisted that the Withdrawal Agreement will not be changed on numerous occasions. Mrs May’s plan is dead-on-arrival, it is up to Brexiteers to ensure that she does not take Brexit with her.
