BARRY Gardiner, Shadow International Trade Secretary, certainly knows how to make an impression.
He not so long ago has occasion to describe Jeremy Corbyns Brexit strategy as b******* and he has made the headlines again this time for correctly arguring that a second referendum would undermine democracy and could lead to civil disobedience.
Gardiner, despite being a Remoaner, obviously had a moment of clarity. However, his collegues are unimpressed.
Chukka Umunna a persistently Remoaning Labour MP, took no prisoners and accused Gardiner of “parroting Nigel Farage” and of “irresponsible” rhetoric: “Its hugely disappointing to hear a member of Labour’s Shadow Cabinet parroting the kind of thing you hear from Nigel Farage and the Brexiteers.”
Umunna insists a second referendum is necessary due to the “deadlocked” negotiatons. In a situation where “Parliament cannot decide how to leave the EU” it is “only logical” the people should have the final say he inisists.
Coming on the day when Michel Barnier has strongly hinted there will be a delay to the October deadline for finalising negotiatons, Umunna’s remarks look almost prophetic and all the more sinister for being so, Brexiteers need to be prepared for the knife in the back clearly being prepared.
