The Swedish Democrats, who are currently on course to win the Swedish General Election on September 9th, look set to offer Swedes a referendum on EU membership.
Jimmie Akesson, the populist parties leader, told Severiges Radio: The EU is not the way to cooperate in Europe. My position is that we should renegotiate the terms of our EU membership and then the people should have the final say.
Two Swedish Democrat MEPs, Kristina Winberg and Peter Lundgren published an opinion piece earlier in the week saying that the Swedish Democrats are in favour of Sweden exiting the EU.
However, despite polling 19.2% in a recent poll and challenging the Social Democrats for the lead in the polls, Mr Akesson does not expect the Swedish Democrats to enter government: “I dont believe I am going to be sitting in government after the next election.”
The establishment centre-right and centre-left parties have already ruled out a colition involving the Swedish Democrats. However, the poll on September 9th increasingly looks like it will be another blow delivered by the long suffering people of Europe against the crumbling EU.
