THE WORLD’S BEST HOTEL: The Story Behind Dubai’s Burj Al Arab

WE’D all love to be able to enjoy a stay in a five-star hotel at some point in our lives, but have you ever considered what it could be like to go even further and try seven-star luxury instead?

Only a handful of hotels in the world have managed to achieve the prestigious rating and one of the best known is probably Dubai’s Burj Al Arab Jumeirah. The site has been welcoming guests for two decades now, and it continues to boast incredibly high standards. In fact, it was recently recognised for its continued excellence by being named the ‘Best Hotel in the World’ at the Ultimately Luxury Travel Related Awards.

A striking design

Set on its own man-made island and standing at 321 metres above sea level, the Burj Al Arab is thought to not only be one of the tallest hotels in the world but also one of the tallest buildings in general. Incredibly, Jumeirah states that it stands higher than the Eiffel Tower and only just drops short of the Empire State Building.

The hotel’s striking design is meant to evoke an Arabian dhow sail, with the structure featuring a special Teflon-coated woven glass fibre screen, which had not been used to such an extent on any other building previously. Its exterior also includes a helipad, and WhatsOn.ae recently confirmed that a very special yoga session is set to be held on it in the coming weeks.

But what can you expect from the Burj Al Arab’s rooms? Well, accommodation of a range of shapes and sizes is on offer, including a deluxe one-bedroom suite, the diplomatic three-bedroom suite and the sheer opulence of the royal two-bedroom suite. The latter includes a lounge, library, and a cinema room, as well as a dining room for 12 and butler service.

Dubai’s first-class facilities

Of course, while the Burj Al Arab’s luxury evidently goes above and beyond, the hotel, in many ways, reflects the state-of-the-art facilities that can be found across Dubai these days.

If you chose to venture out of the hotel during your stay, you would be able to enjoy sights such as the stunning Burj Khalifa – the tallest building in the world. Elsewhere, you could visit the incredible man-made island of Palm Jumeirah and another impressive hotel complex, the Atlantis The Palm.

However, while it is easy to associate Dubai and the United Arab Emirates purely with luxury, it is worth bearing in mind that life in the area does not always have to be on the pricey side. For instance, as Bayut outlines, there are plenty of areas in Dubai and the neighbouring emirate of Sharjah which offer reasonable rents. The latter is more conservative than Dubai, and two-bed apartments there tend to feature annual rents around the AED 36,000 mark – which equates to just £7,500.

An extravagant stay

But, if you’re looking to have the most extravagant stay possible in the UAE, there is probably no better option than the Burj Al Arab.

It has been blowing the minds of guests since its opening in 1999 and, if its recent awards are anything to go by, looks set to continue to do so for many years to come.
