NIGEL Farage got more than he bargained for when he told listeners to his LBC show that he thought Tommy Robinson has brought his arrest on himself and did what he did essentially for publicity. Usually, a stream of angry faces across his live show indicate the presence of leftist trolls but this time it appeared they were coming from Mr Farage’s own supporters. When he took to Twitter, things only got worse:
Now the reporting restrictions have finally been lifted here’s my opinion on Tommy Robinson’s case and why the reporting restrictions need to change pic.twitter.com/k8IAg8ucsT

In all fairness to Mr Farage, he did rightly say that the reporting restrictions on the case show that we are moving towards a “police state”, however, it was his highly personal attacks on Mr Robinson which attracted the most ire. He was accused multiple times of “selling out” with this response being one of the most thoughtful:
Tommy Robinson is heroic, he’s a true British Patriot, he shared what the BBC had already shared before the trial!
Arrested, detained, not allowed his own legal team, sentenced, sentence increased, the person who watched him get arrested was the same judge who sentenced him!

Others were also subtle in their criticism:
Bit disappointed with your tone on this Nigel. Perhaps Tommy orchestrated this deliberately. What it has done is raise the issue globally. TR isn’t calling himself a hero, others are. He can’t control that. Have you had a tap on your shoulder to reign things in by any chance?

However, others were less restrained:
Is it time to retire Nigel? I’m sure you have more than enough money to see you through retirement and then some. You sir have lost the plot and are a traitor

Some long-term supporters were less than impressed:
Nigel I have been an admirer and supporter of you for a number of years but on this one it’s a thumbs down most disappointed

What long-term effect this will have it is hard to tell but I will leave you with this thought:
A bit disappointing to hear this from you @Nigel_Farage.. a lot of people used to look at you like they do Tommy but you seem to have lost the people’s hearts. #TommyRobbinson is heroic and stands for a majority of the people! Like you USED to.
