FACEBOOK has come under attack from the mainstream media over a data breach and the move by the MSM is no surprise, the social media company has eroded their power and now they are fighting back, dirty.
So what actually is the Cambridge Analyitaca scandal that’s being pushed by the MSM?
Basically, in 2014, a company called Cambridge Analytica collected data via an app called “thisisyourdigitallife” which was built by a Cambridge Uni student, Aleksandr Kogan.
Later through his company Global Science Research (GSR), in collaboration with Cambridge Analytica, hundreds of thousands of users were paid to take a personality test and agreed to have their data collected for academic use.
However, the app also collected the information of the test-takers’ Facebook friends, leading to the accumulation of a data pool tens of millions-strong.
Facebook’s “platform policy” unwittingly allowed the company to collect the data.
We all have used these silly little apps to “find out what we will be doing in 40 years” to find out “Who we will marry” or to see “What we will look like as the opposite sex.”
Facebook said: “They may have lots of data but it will not be Facebook user data. It may be data about people who are on Facebook that they have gathered themselves, but it is not data that we have provided.”
The so-called scandal arises when it is claimed that Cambridge Analytica used the stolen Facebook data in targeted advertising during the Brexit referendum and yes, you guessed it the 2016 U.S. Presidential Election.
“Cambridge Analytica has sold itself as the ultimate hi-tech consultant, winning votes by using data to pinpoint target groups and design messages that will appeal powerfully to their interests, although it denies using Facebook information in its work.” – Channel 4 News.
The story has been a collaboration between Channel 4 News, The Guardian/Observer and The New York Times… what a foursome.
Now, let’s look at what actually happened here minus the “intellectual sensationalism” that the broadsheet press claim so desperately not to take part in.
The basis of the story is from a data breach by a Facebook app called “thisisyourdigitallife” in which users take part in a quiz – an app that Facebook shut down in 2014 after learning of a data breach.
The data breach has been an open secret in Tech and Media circles for years, this is nothing new, it’s being sexed up more than Alistair Campbells Iraq War dossier.
But why would they want to do this?
Well, when you bring Cambridge Analytica into the equation, it’s pretty easy to see why.
They claim Cambridge Analytica used the data to influence voters with targeted advertising campaigns in the Brexit campaign and in the 2016 U.S. election, you know, the two votes in which the silent majority ROSE up against their elitist masters.
Now, to give Facebook credit, they allow news from both sides on the platform, including from the alternative media that many claim won Brexit for Brexiteers and The White House for Trump.
Facebook may have banned Britain First out of pressure from the establishment, prior to the ban they allowed BF to use the platform for years, without deletion or interference.
Twitter, on the other hand, has de-verified Conservative voices in the past year, Facebook has not – despite misrepresentations, Facebook is a pretty fair network, and they try to be impartial.
And why would the MSM attack Facebook?
Well, a few months back Facebook changed its algorithm to de-prioritize News.
Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg said the changes would prioritize “meaningful social interactions” over “relevant content.”
Zuckerberg put our friends content in favour of the Mainstream Media.
“The balance of what’s in News Feed has shifted away from the most important thing Facebook can do – help us connect with each other,” Zuckerberg wrote in a Facebook post announcing the change. “We feel a responsibility to make sure our services aren’t just fun to use, but also good for people’s well-being.” said The Zuck.
The MSM is clearly angry with their loss of influence, and are now trying to regain that power by using a total non-story to smear Facebook and sow user distrust.
