Paul Gascoigne was an iconic figure for anyone growing up and watching football in the lat 80s/early 90s. Who can forget when he cried in Turin as England lost on penalties to Germany (again) or the tears of first joy in Euro 96 he inspired as England turned in sublime performances against Scotland and later Holland before he wept in despair again as England lost to Germany again on penalties.
His fall from grace has been well documented and his battle with alcoholism and an addictive personality demons he sometimes controlled but never vanquished:
Just when it seemed like he was on the mend though things have took a definite turn for the worst. He was arrested at Durham station on 20 August and British Transport Police said the 51-year-old has now been charged with one count of sexual assault by touching and will appear at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court on 11 December.
