JACOB REES-MOGG: ‘Britain could be out of the EU by 2019 if MPs wanted the UK out’

JACOB REES-MOGG has said that Britain could be a sovereign nation by April 2019 if British politicians wanted the country to be.

Speaking to Nigel Farage on LBC, the favourite to become the next Tory leader and next Prime Minister hit back at Theresa May’s 2-year transitional period.

Rees-Mogg said: “I don’t think two years makes a lot of difference.”

“We should be ready by April 2019 and the bureaucracy of government should be getting a move on to make sure the borders are ready, that we can implement a proper border regime and that we can regulate the entry of arrivals of EU citizens.”
Mogg told Farage: “I would be upset if we were still under the auspices of the European court following March 2019.

“If our law was still subsidiary to European law after that date that means we have not left, and it would be easy for someone to continue this transition indefinitely.

“Once we are outside the legal supremacy of the EU, we will have sovereignty, we can make laws and no-one can overrule it.”He told Mr Farage: “I would be upset if we were still under the auspices of the European court following March 2019.

“Once we are outside the legal supremacy of the EU, we will have sovereignty, we can make laws and no-one can overrule it.”

Mogg also urged Theresa May to come clean over whether Britain would remain under the laws of the European Court of Justice – which he said should be ruled out as a “red line”.
