Tory Leadership Race 2019

COCK-UP: Twitter In Hysterics At Leadership Launch Blunder

TWITTER users were in stitches yesterday as Tory leadership not-so-hopeful Matt Hancock made a painstaking schoolboy error on his first day on (the audition for) the job.

Currently a 100/1 outsider to take over from Theresa May as Tory leader, Mr Hancock outlined his plans at the launch of his leadership campaign in central London on Monday.

He also pledged to reduce taxes on working people “when we can afford it”, draw up a long-term plan for education, and proposed an insurance scheme so people did not have to sell their homes to pay for social care.

He said: “When we can afford it I will reduce tax on working people so they can keep more pounds in their pockets.

Matt Hancock.

“For the lowest paid I will increase the national living wage to two-thirds of the median income, over £10 an hour, by the next general election in 2022.

“My plan will increase the pay of those on the national living wage by £3,500 a year.”

But viewers watching the launch at home were far less interested in Hancock’s policies than they were in one of his inconveniently-placed props.

“Not sure it was the best branding decision for Matt Hancock to launch his leadership bid in front of the word ‘cock’ at head height with a load of arrows pointing at himself’ journalist Benjamin Butterworth tweeted, highlighting the forehead-slapping blunder .

Benjamin’s tweet, pointing-out the unfortunate slip-up.

The terrible choice in design must have come as a frustrating blow to the politician, who, as well as being ridiculed on social media, was also mocked by Nigel Farage.

The recently re-elected Brexit Party MEP played a clip from Mr Hancock’s speech in London on his his Monday afternoon slot on LBC.

In it, Hancock said: “I offer an emotionally-charged platform to improve lives that is rooted, rooted in objective fact.”

As the recording finished, Mr Farage cracked-up with laughter, saying: “Please somebody, please text and tell me what he meant because I haven’t got a clue.”
