Following Democratic Senator Kamala Harris’ confirmation as Joe Biden’s Vice Presidential pick, many have pointed out her initial support and belief in women who accused Biden of sexual harassment.
With the California Senator being confirmed as Biden’s Vice Presidential pick for the 2020 Presidential race, many have accused her of hypocrisy, given her former animosity towards Biden. This included how early on in the race, Harris openly backed various women who accused Biden of sexual harassment throughout his long political career.
The allegations specifically refer to those of former Democratic Nevada Assembly member Lucy Flores, alongside Amy Lappos, Caitlyn Caruso and D. J. Hill. They aren’t in reference to the infamous case of Tara Reade, who is the most high-profile name in accusers, of who alleged that Biden sexually assulated her in 1993. Biden has denied all the allegations.
During a Nevada event that took place in early 2019, Harris stated that in relation to the allegations ‘I believe them and I respect them being able to tell their story and having the courage to do it’. She continued, ‘He’s going to have to make that decision for himself. I wouldn’t tell him what to do’, referring to Biden entering the 2020 race, as he only entered it in April 2019.
Many called her out for this hypocrisy. Donald Trump Jr., the President’s son, cried ‘Yikes’ in response to the resurfacing of Harris’ support of the allegations. Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani questioned her being Biden’s running mate when she ‘said “I believe” Joe Biden accusers’, and Donald Trump’s attorney Jenna Ellis also asked whether she ‘still does believe’ the allegations. Jim Hoft, the founder of the right-wing Gateway Pundit news site, shared an article from his site which argued that Harris has ‘some explaining to do’.
Biden and Harris are set to face the incumbent Republican President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence in the 2020 Presidential election, set to take place on November 3rd.
