Flattery apparently does not get you everywhere especially if your speaking to the President of the United States. Theresa May called Donald Trump, who was on his way to the Armistice Day commemorations in France, to congratulate him on the performance of the Republicans during the Midterms and was rewarded with an earful.
One of the questions he raised was over the Brexit negotiations and he generally berated the EU’s approach to trade with the US which he branded “unfair”. Mrs May has also not done enough to contain Iran according to the President. He left even Mrs May’s staff “badly shaken” according to reports.
The relationship between the two has been historically difficult with them said to be “lacking chemistry”. Trump’s visit earlier in the year was attended by speculation that he would meet former Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson whom he is said to view as a future Prime Minister.
